Following the principles and guidance of library practice
and in being good stewards of Sandia money, the Technical
Library annually reviews its journal subscriptions as part
of the renewal process for the upcoming year. One focus
of the renewal process is to review current print journal
subscriptions and make a determination of what titles to
continue and what titles not to renew.
For FY07, the Technical Library reviewed 226 current print
title subscriptions. The review process took into consideration
journal cost, usage data, and the cost of physical space
to house the print journal collection. A journal title
was marked for cancellation if it was determined to have
a high cost per use or if usage indicated that the title
was used less than once per month. There has been two phases
to this project to date.

The Sandia Technical Library is moving
toward becoming a “Library of the 21st Century.” What
this means is that the Library is embracing a new model
of collection delivery where information is “just-in-time”,
rather than “just-in case.” The move to this
new model of electronic delivery is a step toward supporting
Lab Transformation and “Operational Excellence.”
Benefits include:
- Reduced space costs
- Lower cost per use for resources
- 24/7/365 access to information
- Multiple use (end-users can search, retrieve/download
materials simultaneously)
- Information push (alerts)
- Desktop access to information
- Economies of scale in purchasing (increased buying-power
via consortiums)
