| Part of due diligence in the management of IES-funded
library content is to assess the usefulness and relevance
of the content in comparison to the cost of providing that
content. A detailed analysis was conducted of all currently
funded electronic content (journal subscriptions, databases,
abstracts, etc.) including annual usage, cost per use,
SNL publishing rates, and citation frequency. Prior to
making final cancellation decisions Sandians were provided
the opportunity to review the analysis and provide feedback
regarding special needs among the low-scoring content.
While the Technical Library does not yet have a firm budget
number for FY08, we are making preliminary cancellation
decisions for full-text databases, abstracts and indexes,
and standards, as the contracts for those renewals must
begin negotiations on August 1. The worksheet for
those content resources has been posted to Web FileShare.
Items highlighted in yellow are what we plan to cancel
for FY08.
The cancellation decisions are a combination from our
analysis, availability of the content from other sources
the Library manages, feedback from Sandians, and a conservative
budget forecast. Unfortunately, the budget cannot sustain
the provision of content for small segments of the population.
We sincerely regret the inconvenience this will undoubtedly
cause your research and job responsibilities. As the Library
currently does with other customer-funded content, we would
be delighted to continue managing access to the content
and its contracts should any customer-provided funds be
made available for FY08. We will need to know the Project
and Task by August 6, 2007, in order to continue the contract.
